Wicked Udug

Text Box:

Sumerian incantation against the seven wicked Udugs,

demons who lived in tombs, in darkness, and in the

desert, from which they would come forth to bring

torment and terror upon the earth.

Wicked Udug, that wanderest impiously over the earth,

Wicked Udug, that bearest disorder over all the earth,

Wicked Udug, that hearest not supplication,

Wicked Udug, that tranfixeth little ones like fish in the water,

Wicked Udug, that bringest down the great in heaps,

Wicked Udug, that smitest the aged man and woman,

Wicked Udug, crossest the broad streets,

Wicked Udug, that makest desert the great steppes,

Wicked Udug, that leapest thresholds,

Wicked Udug, that overthrowest the buildings of the lands,

Wicked Udug, that upsettest the earth. . .

I am a spell-casting priest, the high priest of Ea,

The lord has sent me. . .

Behind me thou art not to howl,

Behind me thou art not to shout,

By a wicked man thou art not to cause me to be taken,

By a wicked Udug thou art not to cause me to be seized.

By the heavens be thou exorcised!  BY the earth be thou exorcised!
