He always deferred to her-- It was always: "I'll ask my wife"; He nevere=contradicted her-- But patiently said: "Of course." He bore her scolding and intermittent nagging With stoic patience And never let on to anybody how (or if) he felt. And when he fell sick In the winter that the Harrison bridge collapsed Under Marty Krantz's cows She was always there With her grumpy ministrations And a tongue sharper than ever, Chastising him for the added trouble She let him know he caused her. He got worse (no wonder) And Dr. Ellis got him into the Vet's Hospital at Madison, Fifty miles away, And she got up there to visit Only once a week. His health bloomed. In two weeks he was healthier Than he had been since his bachelor days: He gained twelve pounds, Laughed, And pinched the day nurse. Dr. Wilson-- A y6oung fellow, but very pleasant; Not high-toned or superior-- Promised That he could leave in the next week-- Monday next. He sank steadily, And died, Late Sunday night, Before she got up there to see him. To hurry and get well And To come to her And He died. -- John C. White |
